Bio

Subhadrakalyan is the last disciple of Pandit Shankar Ghosh having learnt from him for the twelve long years. He is now under the tutelage of Pandit Bickram Ghosh for the past ten years since Pandit Shankar Ghosh’s demise. He has also been learning Dhrupad from Pandit Uday Bhawalkar, Khayal from Vidushi Sanjukta Ghosh, and has learnt Sarod from Dr. Rajeeb Chakraborty. Subhadrakalyan topped both the Tabla and the entire instrumental categories at the prestigious Dover Lane Music Competition in 2016. In 2019, he came first in Tabla at the music competition conducted by the West Bengal State Music Academy. He has been enjoying a national scholarship offered by the Ministry of Culture, Government of India, since 2022. It's the same year he became a B-High graded artiste of Tabla at the All India Radio, Kolkata. As an academic, Subhadrakalyan holds a double Master’s. His first postgraduation was from the department of Comparative Indian Language and Literature, University of Calcutta. He did his second postgraduation from the department of English, St. Xavier’s College (Autonomous), Kolkata. He has read his papers in several national seminars. He has also worked as a junior journalist in different periodicals. Subhadrakalyan has revived the lost art of Tabla-Tarang - the art of producing melodies in a set of several Tablas, derived from the musical pillars of the Indian temples by Guru Jnan Prakash Ghosh. He plays ragas elaborately in it in the form of Dhrupad. Subhadrakalyan's presentation of Tabla-Tarang consists of sixteen Tablas ranging one and a half octaves, and his interpretations of the ragas befit the medium regardless of the usual boundaries. He debuted in Mumbai with his Tabla-Tarang at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in 2024. Subhadrakalyan has collaborated with musicians from India and abroad. Some of his collaborations include a duet of Violin and Tabla-Tarang with Padma Shankar; his performance with David Walters at the Indian Museum, Kolkata; and an impromptu on-stage jamming with Ustad Taufiq Qureshi. Recently he has accompanied his Guru, Pandit Bickram Ghosh, on stage as his premier senior disciple. Subhadrakalyan has recently conceived Trephony: The Trio Project with eminent musicians, Labonya Chaudhuri on the Piano and Moisilee Dutta on the Sarod, and has performed lately with his team once again at the Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre.
